Head Start organization announces family science fair for parents and their kids

Event will involve children collaborating with parents to apply scientific methods and solve problems

Sharon Baptist Head Start, a quality early childcare, education and social services organization announces their “Family Science Fair,” scheduled to hold on April 19, 2017, at 10:00 am. The goal of the event is to give the children and their parents an opportunity to apply scientific methods to conduct research, which they can share with other families and the SBHS staff. Teachers will display the work of students at the fair, while students and their parents will also be given a chance to conduct their experiment in the presence of other participants.

“Sharon Baptist is committed to the development of young children, preparing them for future challenges. The children under our care have already been displaying productivity in science and showing signs of higher understanding of elementary scientific principles. We want to inspire them into creativity, from and early stage so that they can develop an interest in these subjects,” said Barbara Manners, Executive Director, Sharon Baptist Head Start.

The Sharon Baptist Head Start began wacky science in the past school year to allow children the opportunity to investigate, explore and engage in scientific activities and experiments. Through these experiments, most children are currently exceeding the expectations set forth by The New York State Prekindergarten Foundation for The Common Core. Wacky Science Wednesday involves a group of twenty, 3 – 4 years olds. The first experiments involved color mixing experiments during which students had the chance to use scientific inquiry skills to make hypotheses, observations and draw conclusions. They also demonstrated their knowledge about the properties of the materials being used and observed physical properties of food and coloring.

“My kid learned a lot from the wacky science Wednesday classes. He now asks more questions and likes to know how so many things work. I love the directions is imagination is going. The classes have been very helpful, and I implore every parent to encourage the kids to participate,” said Mary K, a parent.

The children and teachers of Oxford U are extending an invitation to parents and their children to attend the fair so they can also have the opportunity to explore science and develop problem-solving skills.
