Online Sales Training Drives Results While Addressing Millennial Learning Styles

Sales author and trainer Shane Gibson has seen the sales profession and training industry evolve significantly in his 24 years in the business. In the past he traveled up to 200 days a year speaking at conferences and training sales teams on 5 continents. Today Shane still travels but a lot less due to changes in sales roles, training technologies, geographically dispersed sales teams and the large influx of millennials into the sales profession.

When asked about how sales has changed Shane shared some interesting insights: “Most organizations I work with today are spread out across numerous cities, sometimes even multiple countries globally. Millennials generally despise sitting through long training sessions. The days of pulling together your entire sales team to do training are becoming a thing of the past. By using elearning tools like D2L, thinkific.com, webinars and sales coaching by Skype or Zoom organizations are now able to onboard, train staff and adapt training to individuals needs faster and more cost efficiently.”

In 2012 Shane partnered with Langara College Continuing studies to develop a four-month Online Professional Sales Certificate Program based upon training programs that Shane Gibson and Bill Gibson developed over the past 20 years. Some of their notable past and present clients include Ford, Zurich Life, ACL, African Bank, and The Greater Vancouver Board of Trade.

“I was skeptical at first if all sales skills could actually be taught online, but 5 years and over 400+ graduates later the feedback on the sales program has been amazing. We have higher enrollment, our completion rate is just over 90% and many of our students have become well recognized sales professionals.” Said Shane.

This is a big shift from traditional sales training where you have to take your sales team out of the office, lock them in a training room and possibly sacrifice revenues in order to develop your team. One of the real benefits to training sales teams online is that it reduces training costs and also allows team members to train in their down-time. For sales people it means training is done on their schedule instead of one dictated to them.
